Seals and sea lions of multiple species are our most rescued animals. The Center has been on the forefront of research on leptospirosis in marine mammals and has published a number of scientific papers on the disease dating back to 1985. And for more than 10 years, we’ve collaborated with researchers at UCLA to study the dynamics of this pathogen in the California sea lion population. The California common bottlenose dolphin coastal population is estimated to be a mere 323 dolphins. The offshore bottlenose population within 300 miles of the west coast of North America may be more than 3,000. To the south of the Mexican border, surveys have yielded an overall estimate of 336,000 dolphins. Each year, the Center holds approximately five patient release celebration events over the course of the spring and summer. Each event is held at a public beach and is attended by approximately 100-200 of the Centers' most generous donors, supporters, friends and other key stakeholders.
